The Kutai Kartanegara Regency (Kukar) Government in East Kalimantan is strengthening the foundation of its economic transformation for the 2025-2030 period, aiming to shift dependency away from the extractive industry. The regency’s new vision, "Kutai Kartanegara Idaman Terbaik" (Best Dream Kukar), focuses on developing a sustainable, prosperous future by establishing itself as a key center for food security, tourism, and green industry. This ambitious plan is centered on modernizing its expansive agricultural sector to increase productivity and efficiency, employing advanced technologies such as tractors, drones, smart irrigation, and digital platforms to optimize farming practices and market access.
This strategic focus on non-extractive sectors is already showing results, particularly in agriculture. For instance, Kukar has become the top rice producer in East Kalimantan, with rice production (in GKG) projected to increase to 127.89 thousand tons in 2025. The 2025-2030 period is designed to strengthen the economic, social, and governance foundations. This includes implementing five "Best" missions, such as promoting downstream agricultural development, tourism, and creative economy as new economic pillars, alongside ensuring equitable basic services and fostering character education based on local wisdom.
