The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), an international professional organization for logistics, transportation, and supply chains, considers the blue economy paradigm to be a crucial strategy for strengthening logistics competitiveness and national supply chain efficiency.
Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi, a member of CILT Indonesia's Advisory Board, stated that this could also strengthen Indonesia's position as a maritime nation in the Indo-Pacific region."Indonesia has a geographical advantage that is crucial for building a competitive logistics and trade ecosystem. This potential needs to be optimized through development that balances economic growth with environmental sustainability," Yukki said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Furthermore, he stated that the blue economy paradigm must also be viewed as a long-term strategy for transforming Indonesia's logistics and maritime sectors. "The blue economy is not just about preserving the marine environment, but rather a strategy for building a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable logistics and supply chain system," Yukki concluded. "When port development, connectivity, digitalization, and coastal area management are integrated, Indonesia will have a much stronger foundation for increasing national economic competitiveness," he added.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimates that the maritime-based economy contributes around US$1.5 trillion to the global economy annually and has the potential to increase significantly with the development of maritime, logistics, energy, and sea-based services industries.Meanwhile, the World Bank considers the implementation of blue economy principles to be a crucial instrument for strengthening economic resilience while maintaining the sustainability of marine resources. Yukki stated that the implementation of the blue economy will encourage the emergence of various new economic opportunities, ranging from the development of maritime technology, more environmentally friendly maritime transportation, green ports, marine-based renewable energy, and strengthening the economies of coastal communities.
This transformation is also believed to be able to increase national logistics efficiency through intermodal integration, the use of digital technology, and the optimization of domestic distribution networks, which currently face the challenge of high logistics costs due to Indonesia's geographical location as an archipelagic nation.
