Ministry of Transmigration Targets Japan as New Export Market for East Java Mangoes by Overcoming Technical Barriers

The Ministry of Transmigration (Kementrans) has targeted Japan as a major new premium destination for mango exports originating from East Java. Speaking at the Digital Economy Ecosystem Festival (FYC Fest) in Surabaya, Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara highlighted that high-quality East Java mango varieties such as the mangga alpukat (avocado mango) from Pasuruan and mangga arumanis from Probolinggo possess strong international competitiveness. To fully unlock Japan’s strict horticultural market and capitalize on its high demand for premium fruit, the Ministry is moving to build localized commodity ecosystems that add value directly within regional transmigrant communities.

However, a key operational challenge blocking immediate access to the Japanese market is technical and biosecurity trade barriers, specifically regarding fruit fly contamination (lalat buah). To resolve this compliance issue, the Ministry is actively collaborating with the National Quarantine Authority (Barantin) and the Ministry of Agriculture to deploy modern quarantine and pest-control infrastructure. By implementing standardized vapor heat treatments and securing certified orchard registrations, the administration aims to elevate the selling price at the farmer level, transform local transmigrant areas into integrated export supply hubs, and establish a reliable fruit trade pipeline between East Java and Japan.
