Indonesia Leverages BRICS Forum to Advance Wheat Seed Research and Gambir Downstream Processing

Indonesia has taken a proactive step toward global market integration by leveraging its presence at the BRICS forum to explore strategic agricultural partnerships. Represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, the nation is actively negotiating bilateral cooperation focused on tropical wheat seed development and the downstream industrialization of gambir (a native extract derived from the Uncaria gambir plant, widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and tanning industries). The initiative aims to enhance domestic food security while maximizing the economic value of Indonesia's unique biodiversity on the international stage.

This diplomatic engagement highlights a critical shift in Indonesia's agricultural trade strategy, aiming to move away from raw material exports toward high-value, processed commodities. By securing advanced agricultural research partnerships within the BRICS network, the country hopes to develop climate-resilient wheat variants suitable for tropical cultivation, reducing its heavy reliance on grain imports. At the same time, establishing a robust downstream processing framework for gambir ensures that local farmers reap higher profit margins from a specialized global market where Indonesia holds a natural competitive advantage.
