Indonesia Encourages ASEAN Collaboration to Strengthen Domestic Ferry Safety

Indonesia, through the Ministry of Transportation, urged stronger ASEAN cooperation to improve domestic ferry safety during the IMO Regional Stakeholder Workshop held in Bali on December 10–11. The event gathered representatives from ASEAN countries, the IMO, the EU, and maritime experts to review policies and share experiences. Director General of Sea Transportation, Muhammad Masyhud, highlighted that ferry services are vital for mobility in archipelagic nations like Indonesia, and strengthening safety is a shared regional responsibility.

Masyhud also appreciated ongoing support from the IMO and EU through the SCOPE–Ship Safety Project, which helps raise safety standards in the region. Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to improving ferry regulations, safety infrastructure, and human-resource quality. He emphasized that continued ASEAN collaboration is key to achieving safer, more reliable, and sustainable maritime transport across Southeast Asia.
