Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman stated that Papua is being prepared to become fully food self-sufficient by 2027. Current production only meets about 120,000 of the 660,000 tons of annual demand, creating a deficit of roughly 500,000 tons that is still supplied from Java and Makassar. The government plans to accelerate field expansion, improve logistics, and strengthen local production so Papua no longer depends on shipments from other islands.
To close the gap, the ministry plans to open around 100,000 hectares of new rice fields across Papua, South Papua, Southwest Papua, and West Papua. Amran emphasized that food security is crucial amid global food and energy challenges, and that better seeds, mechanization, and support for commodities like coffee, cocoa, and livestock will be provided. He also oversaw rice distribution to stabilize prices and met with farmers and local communities to address their needs.
