Indonesia will prioritize self-sufficiency in sugar, eggs, and chicken meat beginning in 2026, following the projected achievement of rice and corn self-sufficiency by the end of 2025. Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono highlighted that President Prabowo Subianto instructed the government to fast-track sugar self-sufficiency due to its essential role in household consumption and strategic industries. The Ministry of Agriculture will roll out two flagship programs: boosting national sugar output and accelerating protein availability. Efforts to expand egg and chicken production will be centered outside Java to reduce regional dependency and ensure every province can independently meet its nutritional needs, including supplying the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. Thirteen provinces beyond Java and East Java have been selected for integrated poultry development involving SOEs, cooperatives, and local farmers.
In parallel, the government is strengthening agricultural downstreaming across 11 horticultural and plantation commodities—such as coconut, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, nutmeg, pepper, and gambier—to enhance value-added exports and global competitiveness. Sudaryono emphasized that agriculture remains Indonesia’s core comparative advantage, offering broad employment opportunities and serving as a foundation for inclusive, sustainable economic growth. Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman previously affirmed that the nation is prepared to officially declare rice and corn self-sufficiency on December 31, 2025, aligning with national food security goals.
