Indonesia Expands Candlenut Exports, Ranks 13th Globally

Indonesia’s candlenut (kemiri) exports reached USD 4 million (IDR 64 billion), securing the country’s 13th position in global exports, contributing 0.5% of the world market. Recent trends show a remarkable increase, with exports surging to USD 9.58 million (IDR 153 billion), up 350% year-on-year, and volume rising 413% to 6,950 tons. Bangladesh and Malaysia remain primary markets, accounting for 64% of exports, while untapped opportunities exist in China, the U.S., Vietnam, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Supported by Indonesia Eximbank’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, the Lombok Tengah Candlenut Village is being empowered with advanced processing machinery, cooling/drying units, and 2,000 superior seedlings to enhance productivity, extend shelf life, and ensure sustainable cultivation. The initiative benefits 40 villages and 350 farmers, with 60% women, producing 120 tons annually, 40% of which is exported. This program aligns with SDGs on zero hunger, gender equality, and economic growth, while boosting local incomes and global market competitiveness.
