Sport tourism, defined as travel based around sporting events and activities, is emerging as a powerful new economic driver with enormous potential for Indonesia. According to Maya Watono, Head of InJourney, the full development of this sector could lead to the creation of up to 30 million jobs nationwide. This projection underscores the government’s growing recognition of sport tourism as a critical component for future national employment growth and economic expansion, leveraging Indonesia's rich natural and cultural assets alongside the public's increasing interest in sports and recreation.
To transform this vision into a reality, key state-owned enterprises, including InJourney and Danantara, are working in close collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf). This concerted effort is focused on developing a comprehensive national roadmap. The goal of this roadmap is to seamlessly integrate the promotion of sport tourism into Indonesia's broader economic and tourism planning, ensuring a structured, sustainable approach to maximizing the sector’s high-value contributions to the national economy.
