Singapore Accelerates Power Export Partnership with Indonesia

Singapore’s Minister for Energy and Technology, Tan See Leng, announced that the government will expedite the electricity export collaboration with Indonesia, following the MoU signed in June 2025. Under this plan, Indonesia will supply power generated from renewable energy plants—including solar and hydropower facilities currently under development—to meet part of Singapore’s electricity demand. Tan stated that both governments are working closely to implement the agreement, with the goal of achieving financial close for the first batch of import projects and starting transmission before the end of this decade.

The initiative is considered vital to advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, which seeks to harness over 20 terawatts of renewable energy potential across Southeast Asia. Tan noted that such cross-border energy trade will ensure more reliable low-carbon electricity, allowing countries to balance power supply based on seasonal variations in solar, wind, and hydropower. Beyond strengthening Singapore’s energy diversification, the collaboration is expected to spur new investments in Indonesia’s renewable energy sector, promote cross-border electricity infrastructure, and create green job opportunities in energy-producing regions.
