KKP and UGM Strengthen Management of National Marine Conservation Areas

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has entered a partnership with Gadjah Mada University (UGM) aimed at reinforcing the institutional framework and human resource capacity for managing Indonesia’s national marine conservation areas. This collaboration emphasizes the vital role of academic expertise in supporting conservation efforts, particularly through research, capacity building, and policy inputs. The joint effort seeks to integrate scientific knowledge with practical conservation strategies to protect sensitive marine ecosystems more effectively.

This alliance is especially timely as KKP pursues its long-term goal of safeguarding 30% of Indonesia’s marine waters by 2045 — a target aligned with global biodiversity frameworks. By involving UGM, KKP gains a partner that can deliver credible research, training, and evaluation. At the same time, the university’s involvement offers students and researchers direct exposure to real-world marine conservation challenges, enhancing both conservation effectiveness and community engagement. This synergy highlights the increasing recognition that sustainable marine protection requires collaborative governance, combining governmental authority with academic rigor and community participation.
