The governors of Jawa Tengah (Central Java) and Jawa Timur (East Java) recently deepened their economic partnership through signing ten memoranda of understanding, aimed at boosting economic growth in both provinces. The agreements, signed at Gedung Negara Grahadi in Surabaya, focus on key sectors including food security, cooperatives and MSMEs, industry and trade, textile and footwear labor skills, agriculture and plantations, and livestock and animal health. The collaboration also involves regional state-own enterprises (BUMD) and business associations like the chambers of commerce and Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI), with the goal of translating institutional agreements into tangible economic activity across the two provinces.
This move reflects a “collaborative government” approach meant to leverage the complementary economic strengths of the two provinces and contribute to national growth. Central Java, for instance, supplies crystal sugar that is needed in East Java, while East Java can support Central Java’s dairy needs. The governors emphasised that beyond institutional ties, the collaboration must generate shared progress and economic renewal for both regions. They framed the partnership as part of a broader mission to bolster both provinces’ roles in the Indonesian economy and support the national agenda.
