An Egyptian entrepreneur, Hasan Sayed Haggah, has set sights on investing in coffee plantations in Kabupaten Luwu Utara, South Sulawesi, signalling strong potential for Indonesia’s coffee export growth to Egypt. The opportunity was raised by Bupati Andi Abdullah Rahim during a meeting with Egyptian businesspeople at the Trade Expo Indonesia 2025 (TEI) in ICE BSD, Tangerang, on 19 October 2025. Facilitated by the Indonesian Trade Attaché to Egypt, Syamsu Alam, the discussion offered long‑term collaboration in trading and plantation operations to fulfill Indonesia’s export targets to Egypt. Haggah, of Golden Coffee Beans, responded positively and is scheduled to visit Luwu Utara to explore further cooperation. According to the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, exports of Indonesian coffee to Egypt reached USD 135.51 million (~IDR 2.22 trillion) in 2024.
The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs emphasises that such investment aligns with efforts to expand export capacity and enhance the role of regional producers. Luwu Utara’s potential as a sourcing area for high‑quality coffee presents a timely opportunity for Indonesia to further penetrate the Egyptian market, which already imports large volumes of robusta beans. This collaboration could strengthen farmer incomes, expand production capacity, and reinforce Indonesia’s position as a leading coffee exporter in the Middle East and North Africa region.
