The government of East Java and the United States are exploring strategic partnerships in education, health, and investment as part of efforts to enhance regional development and strengthen bilateral cooperation. The initiative follows a meeting between East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and US Consul General in Surabaya Chris Green, where both parties emphasized the importance of improving human resource quality and advancing public health. Two new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were established—between Brawijaya University and the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC), and between Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) and Arizona State University. The partnerships aim to enhance academic collaboration through faculty exchanges and curriculum development in digital technology and application design. East Java also plans to invite native English-speaking educators from the US to strengthen language learning in flagship schools.
In the health sector, the collaboration will include a joint conference between Airlangga University and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address communicable disease management. On the investment front, an American company is preparing to build a major factory in Gresik, which is expected to create substantial employment opportunities and boost local economic growth. The East Java administration views these initiatives as catalysts for strengthening human capital development while promoting sustainable economic transformation beyond the province’s reliance on natural resources. The US Consulate General expressed strong support for the initiatives, highlighting that the partnerships reflect the growing economic and educational linkages between the United States and East Java.
