South Sumatra’s First Export of Crackers and Palm Sugar Reaches International Market

South Sumatra has achieved a milestone with its first-ever export of local culinary products— crackers) and palm sugar —officially shipped out via Boom Baru Port on 24 September 2025. The export was facilitated by the regional government in cooperation with Bank Indonesia’s South Sumatra branch, underlining a drive to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) and to diversify export commodities beyond traditional sectors like coal, rubber, fertilizer, and coconut. According to Deputy Governor of South Sumatra Cik Ujang, this export confirms that South Sumatra’s local products meet high-quality standards and can compete internationally. The initiative is seen as both a source of pride and motivation for local entrepreneurs.

The shipment included about 17.16 tons of crackers valued at approximately IDR 562.9 million and 1 ton of palm sugar worth IDR 27 million. These figures underscore the economic potential of expanding MSME’s reach into global markets. The export of crackers and palm sugar not only broadens South Sumatra’s export portfolio but also supports job creation and improves community welfare. The collaboration between local government institutions, financial bodies, and business actors is highlighted as key to enabling MSME to “level up” and embrace international trade.
