Government Ensures Optimal Integration of Industrial Zones and Logistics Chains to Boost Regional Economic Growth

On 20 September 2025, during discussions and visits to the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Kuala Tanjung Port in North Sumatra, the Expert Staff for Regional Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Haryo Limanseto, stated that the development of the Special Economic Zone and investment in the region are poised to bolster the regional economy, thus contributing to the realisation of national economic growth targets. The discussion and visit aim to ensure the optimal integration of the industrial zone with the international port. The discussion also highlighted the significance of supporting infrastructure to facilitate the optimal development of the Sei Mangkei SEZ, including the availability of energy, housing, and adequate accommodation and residential facilities for workers. The government continues to encourage the development of SEZs to accelerate industrial downstreaming, increase exports, and stimulate growth to enhance national competitiveness while providing employment opportunities for the community.

The Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has attracted IDR 6.5 trillion in investment and developed into a palm oil processing hub, achieving export values of IDR 2.7 trillion by 2024. With the expansion of the Sei Mangkei SEZ through the KernelMax project, it is estimated that an additional investment of around USD 20 million will be attracted, with a current employment of approximately 9,600 individuals. In addition, the Port of Kuala Tanjung is projected to become a logistics hub, facilitating greater access for downstream products from Indonesia. It is expected to grow as a strategic trade gateway in western Indonesia. It is vital that stakeholders coordinate their efforts if the region is to develop successfully. The presence of the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Kuala Tanjung Port is set to strengthen Indonesia's global supply chain, fostering inclusive, equitable, and sustainable growth.
