Indonesia is exploring opportunities to export poultry products to various African countries as part of efforts to absorb its domestic production surplus and expand into new markets. Through a recent webinar titled “Peluang dan Potensi Akses Pasar Produk Unggas di Afrika”, government representatives and Indonesian diplomats discussed both the prospects and challenges of entering this emerging market. Africa presents significant potential due to its large population, rising middle class, and increasing urbanisation, which are driving higher demand for animal protein. For instance, Nigeria, with over 220 million people, still faces a shortage in domestic poultry production. This creates opportunities for Indonesia to export poultry breeding stock, feed, and value-added processed products. Similarly, countries like Senegal and the Ivory Coast are experiencing growing consumption patterns aligned with economic development.
Indonesia currently has a substantial domestic surplus, projected at around 308,000 tons of chicken meat and 172,000 tons of eggs in 2024, making exports a strategic move to maintain price stability and reduce waste. By carefully navigating these potential and leveraging diplomatic and trade initiatives, Indonesia aims to turn its poultry production surplus into an export advantage. This strategy could strengthen Indonesia’s position in global markets while supporting domestic industry growth and price stability.
