Government Encourages Adoption of AI as New Engine for Indonesia's Creative Economy

On 16 September 2025, the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Summit (AIIS) 2025 was held at the JS Luwansa Hotel in Jakarta. At this event, Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya stated that the government, through the Ministry of Creative Economy, reaffirmed the importance of artificial intelligence in driving national creative economic growth. Indonesia has significant potential to maximise AI technology, supported by its 185 million internet users and 139 million social media users. AI is also considered capable of accelerating innovation in creative sub-sectors such as design, animation, gaming, applications, and digital marketing. In 2024, the creative economy's contribution to the national GDP exceeded IDR 1,500 trillion and employed over 26.5 million people. Given the ongoing adoption of AI, it is anticipated that this contribution will increase, thus confirming the role of the creative economy as a new engine of national economic growth. Furthermore, AI has the potential to accelerate production, optimise marketing, and facilitate access to global markets.

Furthermore, Teuku emphasised the pivotal role of human creativity in the creative ecosystem, underscoring that AI is a collaborator, not a substitute for creators. Teuku also assessed that the licensing mechanism for creative products is very important for ensuring creators continue to receive recognition and fair returns. The Ministry of Creative Economy is developing a strategic framework to ensure that AI development aligns with copyright protection, with a primary focus on research, innovation, intellectual property protection, increasing digital literacy, and support for local AI startups. Additionally, the government is preparing an urban programme with a pilot project in Jakarta, with the aim of improving housing quality and supporting gig economy workers. Cooperation between the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Creative Economy and the Jakarta Provincial Government is set to provide co-working spaces in Tanah Abang and Blok M.
