The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia has signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the Global Carbon Council (GCC) and Plan Vivo Foundation. Furthermore, a partnership with the Gold Standard Foundation was also announced. This strategic measure underscores Indonesia's position as a significant player in the global carbon market and ensures that the national carbon market is transparent, credible, and aligned with international standards. This step is a follow-up to the launch of overseas carbon trading in 2025. This latest agreement represents a significant step in Indonesia's ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This MRA is expected to create new opportunities for Indonesian carbon projects to enter the global market. The economic value of carbon has the potential to serve as both an environmental instrument and a fair and sustainable economic instrument. This cooperation will ensure that the benefits of the carbon market are experienced not only by businesses but also by the community. In particular, local communities play a vital role in the protection of forests, coasts and other significant ecosystems. This MRA ensures mutual recognition of the Indonesian Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certification (SPEI), which is managed by GCC and Plan Vivo according to international standards.
