Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has committed to elevating Jakarta’s role in building a sustainable blue economy—an economic model that balances growth with the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems. During the PEMSEA (Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia) Local Governments Forum 2025, he emphasised Jakarta’s substantial marine assets—almost 7,000 km² of sea, 120 km of coastline, and 113 islands—as central to its development vision. The city’s medium-term plan places environmental protection, blue economy initiatives, climate resilience, nature, and energy at the heart of its transformation into a sustainable global city.
Pramono outlined specific strategies, including integrated coastal management that coordinates spatial planning, flood control, and island governance, as well as ecosystem restoration projects like mangrove reforestation, coral transplantation, and marine habitat protection (also referred to as “blue carbon” efforts). He also pointed to potential in marine tourism—such as resort islands like Ancol and community-based tourism—as well as sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and small-scale marine businesses, particularly in the Thousand Islands. The governor launched the “State of the Coast Jakarta 2025” report to chart actions for coastal protection, community empowerment, and sustainable ocean development, stressing that large cities can lead in environmental stewardship rather than contributing to degradation.
