Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto wrapped up a short yet substantive visit to Beijing, holding a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People on September 3, 2025. The warm, cordial discussion followed their joint attendance at the 80th anniversary celebration of China’s wartime resistance victory. During their talks, Prabowo expressed appreciation for Xi’s invitation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin, apologized for being unable to attend, and thanked the Chinese government for their warm reception of his delegation. He also referenced their previous state visit in November 2024 as a significant milestone, reaffirming the enduring strategic ties between Indonesia and China that have spanned over seven decades.
A central topic of the visit was the ambitious Giant Sea Wall project proposed to span approximately 500 kilometers along the northern coast of Java, from Banten to Gresik, aimed at mitigating climate change impacts such as tidal flooding and sea-level rise. The project is estimated to cost around US $80 billion (approximately Rp 1,297 trillion). Beyond its primary function of flood protection, the Giant Sea Wall is designed as an adaptive system that balances infrastructural resilience with the preservation of coastal ecosystems and communities. Prabowo underscored Indonesia’s role as a co-investor—not solely dependent on foreign funds—highlighting the project’s integration into broader national strategies for maritime infrastructure strength and regional economic stability
