CPO Exports Soar 32.9%, Indonesia's Trade Balance Remains Strong

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that Indonesia's export performance remained solid throughout the first seven months of 2025. Two leading commodities, namely crude palm oil (CPO) and its derivatives, and iron and steel, were the main drivers of non-oil and gas export growth amidst declining coal exports. BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, explained that exports of CPO and its derivatives grew significantly in terms of value, volume, and average global price. "The value of iron and steel exports increased 10.29% cumulatively, while the value of coal exports decreased 21.74%. Meanwhile, the export value of CPO and its derivatives rose 32.92% from January to July 2025," she said in an official release on Monday (September 1, 2025).

Export performance supported by CPO and iron and steel, has kept Indonesia's trade balance positive. As of July 2025, BPS recorded a surplus of USD 4.17 billion. This surplus keeps Indonesia's trade balance consistently positive for 63 consecutive months since May 2020. In July 2025, exports reached USD 24.75 billion, a 9.86% increase compared to the same period last year, while imports fell 5.86% to USD 20.57 billion. The largest surplus was recorded in non-oil and gas commodities, particularly vegetable fats and oils, mineral fuels, and iron and steel. Cumulatively, the January-July 2025 trade balance recorded a surplus of USD 23.65 billion, supported by a non-oil and gas surplus of USD 34.06 billion. However, oil and gas commodities still recorded a deficit of USD 10.41 billion. Pudji explained that this trade surplus was primarily driven by leading non-oil and gas commodities, which support the resilience of Indonesia's exports.
