The Indonesian government continues to expand the scope of its Social Forestry program as part of its sustainable national development strategy. Deputy Minister of Forestry Sulaiman Umar Shiddiq announced that the social forestry area has now reached 8.3 million hectares, encompassing more than 11,000 decrees (SK) and serving more than 1.42 million beneficiaries across Indonesia. This announcement was made at the highlight of the 2025 National Social Forestry Festival, held at the Manggala Wanabakti Building Complex in Jakarta from August 20-22, 2025. This annual event, part of the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence, under the theme "Caring for Forests, Inheriting Hope. This proves that forest communities are no longer viewed as objects, but rather as the primary subjects in forest management. Communities are not only forest guardians, but also green economy actors capable of sustainably utilizing forest potential," said Shiddiq.
He also emphasized that Social Forestry is a direct implementation of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 14 of 2025 concerning the Acceleration of National Food, Energy, and Water Self-Sufficiency Development, as well as Presidential Regulation Number 12 of 2025 concerning national strategic projects in the community-based forestry sector. According to data from the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut), to date, 15,754 Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) have been established across various regions. These groups produce approximately 2,987 commodities, equivalent to 18.95% of the total commodities, including staple foods such as corn and rice. KUPS products are not only marketed domestically, but some have been exported and recognized internationally, directly impacting the income of forest village communities.
