Although Tarakan has long been known as a milkfish hub, Hairulliansyah, Head of Export Development at the Tarakan City Department of Fisheries and Marine Affairs and Fisheries, explained that kurau fish is actually a commodity with a higher export value. Its soft flesh texture, unique flavor, and premium quality make kurau fish highly sought after in markets such as Japan, Malaysia, and even several Middle Eastern countries. Domestically, this fish is often traded at a higher price than other common fish, making it highly potential for direct export without going through intermediaries.
The advantages of kurau fish extend beyond its taste and quality, but also to the economic opportunities it offers local fishermen. While the catch is smaller than milkfish, because its price is several times higher than that of the domestic market, fishermen reap significant benefits. This situation encourages synergy between institutions such as the local government, the maritime office, and exporters, ensuring sustainable management of this commodity. With the support of efficient quarantine facilities and distribution, kurau fish could further strengthen Tarakan's position on the national fisheries export map.
