On 19 August 2025, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto received a visit from Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste Jess Dutton in Jakarta. The meeting covered a range of economic cooperation issues, including the progress of negotiations for the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA), potential trade cooperation, and developments in reciprocal tariff negotiations between the two countries and the United States. The ICA-CEPA agreement is expected to expand the scope of trade opportunities, encompassing goods, services, and investment, between Indonesia and Canada.
Ambassador Jess Dutton expressed appreciation to the Indonesian Government for the completion of the final stages of drafting the ICA-CEPA agreement. It is hoped that the ICA-CEPA agreement will serve as a catalyst for discussions on cooperation agendas in the fields of trade, energy, and security between the two countries. Furthermore, Ambassador Jess Dutton expressed his appreciation for Indonesia's success in the reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States, resulting in a significant reduction to 19% from the previous 32%. The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga, has stated that collaboration between the governments of Indonesia and Canada is vital for establishing a robust foundation for enhancing mutually beneficial bilateral economic relations, while also encouraging diversification of cooperation in various fields.
