Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, expressed the country’s ambition to become the leading supplier of crude palm oil (CPO) to Canada, moving up from its current position as the second-largest exporter. This statement was made after his meeting with Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Heath MacDonald, in Jakarta, marking MacDonald’s first international visit since taking office. During the discussions, both sides highlighted global challenges such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, and the looming threat of food crises, which reinforced the urgency of strengthening agricultural supply chains and trade partnerships between the two nations.
Beyond palm oil, the bilateral dialogue also explored opportunities for collaboration in livestock—particularly dairy and live cattle—as well as agricultural technology transfer and climate resilience initiatives. Canada reaffirmed its commitment to boosting trade ties through the newly ratified Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). In 2024, Indonesia’s agricultural exports to Canada were valued at over USD 222 million, with rubber (USD 115.4 million), cocoa (USD 58.2 million), coffee (USD 29.5 million), and pineapple (USD 5.8 million) as the top commodities. This trade performance signals significant potential for palm oil to take a leading role in Indonesia’s exports to the Canadian market.
