PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI), a subsidiary of PT Semen Indonesia (SIG), is expanding its main Tuban Plant facility in East Java to support specialty cement exports to the United States of up to 1 million tons per year. The new facility includes a pier with a berthing capacity of up to 50,000 DWT (down from 15,000), silos for cement and clinker, a 4.1-km-long modern conveyor system, and a ship loader with a capacity of 1,000 tons per hour.
This investment is part of a strategic collaboration between SBI and Taiheiyo Cement Corporation. It comes at a time when the domestic cement market is experiencing oversupply. SBI's Corporate Communications Manager, Novi Maryanti, stated that this move is expected to not only maintain profitability but also strengthen the country's position in the global supply chain. The construction of this facility is accompanied by changes in the management structure, aimed at aligning export strategies from upstream to downstream and ensuring operational readiness by the first quarter of 2025.
