On 12 August 2025, the Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Jakarta. The meeting focused on the development of Indonesia's innovation ecosystem and opportunities to leverage intellectual property to drive national economic growth. Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasised the importance of strengthening sustainable development elements in all WIPO programmes and initiatives. Moreover, he urged the utilisation of intellectual property that can directly contribute to poverty alleviation and improved community welfare. Director General Tang conveyed appreciation for Indonesia's advancement in establishing an intellectual property ecosystem and reaffirmed WIPO's commitment to supporting Indonesia through training, technical assistance, and collaboration to implement tangible programs.
During the meeting, both parties agreed to strengthen the collaboration between Indonesia and WIPO through various strategic initiatives, including human resource capacity building, innovation promotion, and increasing intellectual property literacy among the public. On the sidelines of the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono witnessed the signing of a Letter of Intent on Intellectual Property Training for Diplomats, establishing the foundation for collaboration to enhance the competencies of Indonesian diplomats in contributing to economic diplomacy and intellectual property-based innovation in global forums. As part of the Director General Tang's agenda during his visit to Jakarta, meetings were held with various stakeholders. This visit is a testament to Indonesia and WIPO's dedication to enhancing collaboration in the realm of intellectual property, underscoring the significance of their partnership in propelling intellectual property as a catalyst for inclusive, sustainable, and future-oriented economic growth.
