On 12 August 2025, the Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, stated that Indonesia would continue to expand its export markets for domestically produced goods beyond Europe, America, and Latin America, as well as Africa. In pursuit of its strategic objective to expand Indonesian exports to Africa, the Indonesian government has initiated exploratory negotiations with several African countries. The Minister for Trade also noted that Africa seeks a regional agreement, but according to Budi, this will take longer as it requires consensus among member states. In this context, Indonesia is pursuing bilateral negotiations and exploring export markets in order to leverage its significant industrial capacity.
Recently, the Indonesian government signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Peru, aiming to expand market access to Latin America. Trade access to South America is supported by similar cooperation between Indonesia and Chile. On the same day, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, stated that the agreement between Indonesia and Peru supports easier access for imports and exports of trade products from both countries. While the cooperation has not yet reached the investment aspect, both countries have agreed to negotiate trade in goods and subsequently address investment-related matters.
