Indonesia Exports Thousands of Tons of Gravel, a Commodity in High Demand in the United States and Japan

Gravel is one of Indonesia's major export commodities. According to the Indonesia Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS) 2020–2024 Export Commodity Analysis, in 2024, the value of Indonesia's gravel exports reached USD 55.3 million (around IDR 900 billion). Over the past five years, the value of gravel exports has grown relatively stable. Overall, the volume of exports has remained consistent at an average of over 8 million tonnes per year. This indicates that gravel is one of Indonesia's key non-metallic mineral commodities for the export market, particularly for countries requiring land reclamation and coastal infrastructure development. The main destinations for these exports are Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Taiwan and Japan.

In 2024, Singapore was the main destination for Indonesian gravel exports, with an export value of USD 52.0 million — accounting for 94.05% of the total. This figure represents a 3.47% increase compared to 2023. Meanwhile, in terms of the province of origin, exports were almost entirely dominated by the Riau Islands Province, which contributed 93.75% to the total national gravel export value with an export weight of 7,982 million tonnes — an increase of 4.41% compared to 2023. This increase was accompanied by a rise in export value from USD 50.2 million to USD 51.9 million (an increase of 3.39%). However, East Nusa Tenggara experienced a 20.46% decrease in export volume to 13,100 tonnes, as well as a 26.32% decrease in export value to USD 2 million. East Java Province also decreased in export volume, from 16,700 to 10,000 tons (a 40.18% decrease), and in export value, from USD 2 million to USD 1.3 million (a 37.58% decrease).
