RI and Kazakhstan Agree on Potential Energy Cooperation

The Indonesian Ambassador to Astana, M. Fadjroel Rachman, and the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, agreed that the significant potential for cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector needs to be realized immediately for the benefit of the people of both countries. "The draft MoU, or Memorandum of Understanding, is planned to be signed by the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan during a state visit at the Head of State level. The Energy MoU will serve as an umbrella for cooperation, not only between governments but also as a reference for business-to-business cooperation," said Ambassador Fadjroel. In a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Astana received in Jakarta on Thursday (August 7, 2025), Ambassador Fadjroel expressed optimism that the MoU will further advance cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.

The two parties discussed opportunities for developing energy cooperation in the upstream and downstream oil and gas sectors, renewable energy, as well as policy development and research. Ambassador Fadjroel conveyed the progress of the exploratory dialogue on cooperation between Pertamina and Kazmunaygas (Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company). He expressed his hope that the finalization of the MoU and the concrete implementation of this energy cooperation would support President Prabowo's aspirations, particularly in the area of energy security. Meanwhile, Minister Yerlan committed to immediately finalizing the MoU on energy between the two countries, which had been submitted by Indonesia. At the meeting, Ambassador Fadjroel conveyed to his Minister Yerlan about the investment opportunities in the downstream oil and gas sector in Indonesia, particularly the development of storage and refining facilities, as well as counter-investments in the upstream oil and gas sector. Kazakhstan is said to be the most advanced economy in Central Asia, rich in oil, gas, and minerals, with oil production reaching 1.8 million barrels per day.
