Green Jobs: Promising Career Opportunities but Hampered by Human Resource Readiness and Policy

Green jobs, or green jobs, offer tremendous opportunities to support low-carbon economic development while creating new jobs. It is estimated that the transition to a green economy could add between 1.8 and 2.2 million green jobs in Indonesia by 2060, especially since green investments have been shown to generate up to 7–10 times more jobs than conventional investments. Sectors such as renewable energy, environmentally friendly agriculture, and forestry are key contributors to creating these career opportunities.

However, these high expectations are offset by serious structural challenges. According to a survey of university students, 71% considered green jobs an attractive opportunity, and 98% agreed that green jobs make a positive contribution to the environment and society. However, more than half of respondents did not yet understand this concept, highlighting the lack of available education, training, and information. Access to quality training remains limited, while government incentives and policies supporting the green transition have not been sufficient to accelerate the implementation of green jobs in an equitable and inclusive manner.
