Labuan Bajo has achieved a new milestone in local food security with the first organic vegetable harvest on 1.5 hectares of land in Golo Bilas Village. A collaboration between the Labuan Bajo Diocese, the Mitra Organik Program Foundation, and support from Astra through the Prosperous Village program has begun producing pokcoy, lettuce, zucchini, chilies, tomatoes, and carrots. All of these are being prepared to meet the needs of community kitchens and are ready for export to international standards from the United States, Europe, and even Japan.
This initiative also addresses the challenge of vegetable supply, which has traditionally relied on sources outside the East Nusa Tenggara region. The Deputy Regent of West Manggarai, Yulianus Weng, described this program as a solution to strengthen the farmers' economy, create jobs, and support three "Free Nutritious Meal" kitchens serving approximately 9,000 children. The hope is that Labuan Bajo will not only become a leading tourism destination but also a center for sustainable horticultural production capable of penetrating the export market.
