Indonesia is rapidly increasing its lithium imports, primarily from Australia, to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain and become a global EV manufacturing hub. Previously importing lithium from Africa, Indonesia now prefers Australia due to lower shipping costs. The government has tasked state-owned mining company MIND ID to investigate lithium reserves in Australia’s Northern Territory, following an agreement made in late 2024. The country focuses on producing nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries using its rich nickel reserves, while also exploring lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technologies.
To build a resilient battery industry, Indonesia is fostering partnerships for technology transfer and supply security, notably with China, the leader in lithium refining. Additionally, Indonesia collaborates with French miner Eramet to explore domestic lithium deposits in Central Java’s Bledug Kluwu area, aiming to develop local sources for future battery production.
