Exports of cocoa and processed products recorded a spectacular 129.86 percent surge in the first half of 2025, making it the non-oil and gas commodity with the highest growth, according to data from the Ministry of Trade. However, this success is overshadowed by structural obstacles: the 19 percent import tariff imposed by the United States could reduce the competitiveness of Indonesian cocoa products in key global markets.
This situation underscores the paradox of the domestic cocoa industry: production and exports are showing impressive performance, but tariff pressures could pose a thorn in the side. To maintain growth momentum, the government is expected to strengthen diplomatic channels, including negotiating lower tariffs or exemptions, expanding access to alternative markets, and encouraging downstreaming to strengthen the industry's resilience.
