Minister Amran Says Surge in Rice Production Boosts National Economy

Indonesia’s Agriculture Minister, Andi Amran Sulaiman, highlighted that the recent surge in national rice production not only ensures food security but also significantly drives the country’s economic growth and improves farmers' welfare. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Agriculture achieved a historic national rice stock of 4.2 million tons as of July 2025. According to the USDA, Indonesia is projected to produce 34.6 million tons of rice in the 2024/2025 planting season, surpassing Thailand and Vietnam, and exceeding the Ministry's target of 32 million tons.

Minister Amran also noted that agriculture contributed 10.52% to Indonesia's GDP in Q1 2025 — the highest on record. During a visit by Prof. Hamid Fahmi Zarkasyi, the Rector of UNIDA Gontor, the professor praised Amran’s leadership for reviving Indonesia’s legacy of rice self-sufficiency achieved during the Soeharto era. He emphasized the importance of protecting agriculture from the pressures of industrialization and commended Amran’s policies as impactful and deserving of full public support.
