Indonesia and Canada have intensified their agricultural diplomacy, focusing notably on enhancing Indonesia’s role as a key exporter of crude palm oil (CPO) to Canada. During a high-level visit in late July 2025, Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman and Canadian counterpart Health MacDonald discussed expanding Indonesia’s CPO exports, which already make Indonesia the second-largest supplier to Canada, with a shared ambition to become the top exporter. They also explored cooperation in livestock (dairy and live cattle), agricultural technology transfer, and climate-resilient farming practices as part of broader strategic ties under the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Already in 2024, Indonesia exported over USD 222 million in agricultural commodities to Canada, including rubber, cocoa, coffee, and pineapple. CEPA offers significant tariff liberalization—up to 90.5% on Canadian duties—making Indonesian palm oil and other priority exports like textiles, wood products, processed foods, and edible bird’s nests more accessible in Canadian markets. This partnership aims to build a mutually beneficial, sustainable, and modern agricultural sector amid global climate uncertainties and food security challenges.
