Maintaining Competitiveness, Indonesia and Vietnam Strengthen Digital Economy Collaboration

The governments of Indonesia and Vietnam continue to tighten their partnership by exploring cooperation opportunities across several strategic sectors, especially amid today’s global uncertainty. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto sees major prospects for concluding strategic agreements in other equipment industries, trade, power, services, hotels, restaurants, and fisheries. “Indonesia and Vietnam have signed a Letter of Intent to develop the digital economy and technical capacity in order to reinforce infrastructure, encourage innovation, and foster inclusive and sustainable growth,” he said on Sunday (3rd August 2025). Airlangga stressed that collaboration among regional countries is essential for boosting competitiveness as well as promoting trade and investment.

Both nations are also committed to preserving an open, resilient and forward-looking multilateral trading system over the long term. Airlangga added that Vietnam plays an important role in the ASEAN Economic Community. The ongoing review of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) reflects efforts to streamline commerce amid global disruptions. “With the current global trade wars, I believe ASEAN—which believes in multilateral collaboration—must strengthen its own intra-ASEAN economy,” he remarked. Through the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), Airlangga hopes implementation can raise ASEAN’s digital-economy value to USD 2 trillion by 2030. Indonesia’s share is projected to reach about USD 600 billion. “Indonesia is estimated at around USD 600 billion, so I think this is an opportunity for Indonesia and also for ASEAN,” he concluded.
