On 29 July 2025, at the Merdeka Fest Exhibition Opening Ceremony in Jakarta, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasised the importance of leveraging opportunities in sports equipment exports, noting the successful penetration of sports products such as clothing, shoes and bicycles into export markets. According to data from UN Comtrade and the Indonesia Statistics (BPS), Indonesia's exports of sports apparel, including jackets and trousers made from dry-fit and polyester materials, have reached markets in the United States, Japan, Germany, and South Korea. In 2024, the estimated export value reached USD 480 million or IDR 7.87 trillion. While this figure remains modest, it is encouraging to note that the trend is rising, despite the global economic challenges the industry is currently facing. The market share for sports products in Indonesia shows great promise and offers significant opportunities for growth, particularly given the growing emphasis on healthy living in modern society.
Between January and April 2025, Indonesia exported USD 1.39 billion worth of sports shoes, a decrease of 1.63% compared to the same period last year. Overall shoe exports in the first quarter of 2025 were USD 1.89 billion, a 1.89% y-o-y increase. Indonesia ranks sixth in global sports footwear export volume. Statista Market Outlook data projects the global sports footwear market to reach USD 130 billion. Indonesia's sports footwear industry is growing at a rate of 13.1% annually and ranks third worldwide, with a production of 450 million pairs a year. This industry employs over 500,000 people in West Java, East Java, and Banten. In 2024, the Indonesia Statistics (BPS) reported sports equipment exports of USD 275.29 million, with a projected market value of USD 185 billion by 2028. Furthermore, in 2024, Indonesia's bicycle exports reached USD 119 million, with successful exports being made to the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and Malaysia. The market value for this product is expected to reach USD 1.1 billion by 2027.
