Indonesia and the United Kingdom Draft Artificial Intelligence Regulations Covering Six Sectors

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is collaborating with the Government of the United Kingdom to draft artificial intelligence policies in Indonesia. This initiative is outlined in the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Policy Dialogue Country Report, encompassing six sectors. Sectors include e-commerce, financial services, the creative economy, health, sustainability, and education. The Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, stated that Indonesia and the UK are in the process of drafting artificial intelligence regulations, with a target completion date of the end of July 2025. This will be followed by discussions in August and September, leading to the finalisation of a Presidential Regulation. Nezar emphasised the crucial role of the government in accelerating the formulation of regulations to drive AI innovation. He emphasised governance, digital infrastructure, and talent development as priorities.

The Artificial Intelligence Policy Dialogue Country Report identifies six key aspects in strengthening the AI ecosystem: digital infrastructure, data governance, digital talent, investment, ethics, and inclusivity. This perspective forms the basis for the formulation of national policy. The report emphasises two key points, namely building blocks and the digital ecosystem. Nezar hopes that these recommendations will broaden understanding of the AI landscape in Indonesia and help the government determine the direction of its policies. The Head of Economics and Social Affairs at the British Embassy in Jakarta, Samuel Hayes, hopes that this report will provide a solid foundation for the development of Indonesian policies, offering a diverse range of perspectives. Furthermore, Wijaya Kusumawardhana, an Expert Staff Member for Social and Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, stated that discussions on the AI roadmap have entered the legislative stage. The Directorate General of Digital Economy at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has collated input from various ministries and institutions prior to submitting it to the Ministry of Law.
