Malaysian Plastic Giant Invests IDR 115 Billion in Batang Special Economic Zone

Malaysia's largest plastic packaging company in the Asia Pacific has officially invested in the Batang Industrial Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Central Java. The initial investment from the company, Thong Guan Industries Bhd, is USD7 million, equivalent to IDR 115 billion. Thong Guan Industries is the first Malaysian investor in the Batang SEZ. The company will build a factory on a five-hectare plot of land to produce various plastic products, such as plastic wrapping, plastic garbage, and plastic film, for domestic and global markets. The manufacturing facility built by Thong Guan Industries in the Batang SEZ will adopt environmentally friendly technologies, such as energy-efficient machinery, plastic waste recycling, and an internationally recognized environmental management system, as part of Thong Guan's commitment to green industry practices. Ngurah Wirawan, President Director of PT. Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (The Batang Industrial Special Economic Zone /SEZ), stated that the project is projected to create 500 jobs and strengthen the region's contribution to the national economy. "Thong Guan is no ordinary company. It's an industrial giant that's entrusting its future to Batang Regency," he said on July 25th, 2025.

Thong Guan Industries itself is one of the largest plastic packaging companies in the Asia Pacific, with a branch in China. The company is known for its innovation in the production of stretch film, eco-friendly plastic bags, and various flexible packaging solutions for the industrial and consumer sectors. The company even exports up to 85% of its products to various countries, including South Korea, Mexico, Chile, and Vietnam, with total revenues reaching IDR 4.2 trillion per year. The Managing Director of PT TGP Plaspack Lestari, Dato' Ang Poon Chuan, said that Thong Guan is known as a top global exporter of stretch film and a market leader in trash bags to Japan, with over 50 years of experience. "We see Batang not just as a location but as the future of our industrial supply chain," he said. The Indonesian Consul General in Penang, Wanton Saragih, viewed this investment as evidence of strengthening bilateral economic relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.
