Four Indonesian Nickel Mines Join the Global Top List

Nickel has become a globally strategic commodity amid the clean energy transition and EV growth. Indonesia now dominates the global nickel market, accounting for nearly 59% of global production in 2024 with 2.2 million tons. Four Indonesian mines, including the world-leading Weda Bay Project in Maluku, are now ranked among the seven largest operating nickel mines globally. Weda Bay alone produced over 516,000 tons per year and is expected to operate until 2069, securing Indonesia’s long-term role in global supply chains and attracting strong international investor interest.

This milestone strengthens Indonesia’s position in global trade negotiations and supports the national downstreaming (hilirisasi) strategy. Rather than merely exporting raw ore, Indonesia is advancing value-added production like MHP and battery components. However, sustainability remains a key challenge—environmental management and ESG standards must be upheld. With the right balance of innovation, policy, and responsible mining, Indonesia can turn its nickel dominance into a foundation for inclusive, green economic transformation.
