Deputy Foreign Ministry Arif Havas Oegroseno emphasized the urgency for Indonesia to revise its export strategy following the imposition of a 19% reciprocal tariff by the United States. He highlighted the importance of diversifying not only export destinations but also product types. Currently, Indonesia heavily relies on labor-intensive sectors such as footwear and garments, which are vulnerable from 32% to 19%, it still signals a need for more strategic market positioning.
Drawing from experience as Indonesia’s ambassador to Germany, Havas explained that Indonesian products rarely featured among Germany’s top import needs, unlike exports from other ASEAN countries. He suggested that Indonesia expand into high-demand sectors such as healthcare equipment, electronics, and technology-related goods. By broadcasting its product range, Indonesia could enhance competitiveness and access more global markets beyond traditional commodities and apparel.
