In the first half of 2025, East Java exported mechanical and electrical machinery with a value of USD 259.4 million, with destinations including the United States, Japan, Singapore, and China. The Assistant for Economy and Development at the East Java Provincial Government Secretariat, Joko Irianto, has stated that imports of these products reached USD 1 billion in the first half of 2025. The trade balance for mechanical and electrical machinery showed a deficit of USD 2.3 billion in 2024. This situation shows the high dependence on imported products, which presents both challenges and opportunities for the national industry. He said that the number of special machinery industries in East Java totals 476 business units, with the highest concentration in Gresik Regency at 27 units, followed by Malang at 26 units and Mojokerto at 24 units.
The Ministry of Industry's Data and Information Centre has reported that the export value of mechanical and electrical machinery in 2022 was USD 694.5 million, USD 724 million in 2023, and USD 850.6 million in 2024. Meanwhile, East Java imported mechanical and electrical machinery to the value of USD 3.02 billion in 2022, USD 2.5 billion in 2023 and USD 3.04 billion in 2024. The Surabaya Manufacturing Exhibition 2025 is an ideal platform for manufacturing industry professionals to expand their business networks, enhance their business potential, and establish collaborations and synergies with relevant stakeholders. Consequently, the manufacturing industry has the potential to overcome challenges, promote self-reliance and drive sustainable economic growth. According to data from the Indonesia Statistics (BPS) of East Java, the province's economic growth in the first quarter of 2025 reached 5% (YoY), with the manufacturing sector contributing 31.42% to the Regional Domestic Product. Meanwhile, in the fourth quarter of 2024, East Java's investment realisation recorded a contraction of 20.3% compared to the same period in the previous year.
