Indonesia has emerged as the 8th largest exporter of essential oils globally, contributing 4.12% to the international market. With 40 out of the world's 97 known essential oil plants growing in its diverse ecosystems, and 25 already cultivated commercially, Indonesia has solid potential in this industry. In 2024, the country exported USD 259.54 million worth of essential oils, with patchouli oil accounting for more than half. Despite the high export figures, most products are still shipped as raw materials. The Ministry of Industry emphasizes the need for downstream development to enhance added value, competitiveness, and community empowerment, especially for the over 200,000 workers involved, primarily from small and medium enterprises.
To support this, the government has prioritized the essential oil sector in national industrial planning and launched initiatives like Aromatika Indofest 2025, held on 9–11 July in Jakarta. The event showcases Indonesia’s potential in natural fragrance products and promotes collaboration among businesses, researchers, and communities. It aims to tackle challenges such as limited product diversification, raw material standards, and access to global markets.
