Indonesia–US Strengthen Low-Carbon Energy Collaboration, Encourage Green Investment and Environmental Rehabilitation

The Indonesian government continues to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy through strategic partnerships in the energy sector, including with ExxonMobil Indonesia. In an official meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Minister Airlangga Hartarto received ExxonMobil Indonesia's new CEO, Wade Floyd, to discuss investment and accelerated development of clean energy technologies in Indonesia. This collaboration not only aims to strengthen national energy security but also serves as an integral part of Indonesia's economic decarbonization agenda. The government is encouraging further exploration of crude oil and LPG imports from the United States, which is expected to balance the Indonesia-US energy trade balance.

One of the milestones of this collaboration is a planned USD 10 billion investment for the construction of an integrated petrochemical complex on Java Island, including a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facility targeted for operation before 2030. CCS technology enables the capture and storage of up to 2 million tons of CO₂ per year—a crucial step in reducing the energy sector's carbon footprint. ExxonMobil Indonesia CEO, Wade Floyd, expressed his appreciation for the Indonesian government's support in realizing this project. He emphasized that this investment will create more than 10,000 jobs during construction, as well as 600 permanent, high-skilled positions. Environmentally, the implementation of this project holds great promise in reducing pressure on forest areas and natural ecosystems. The development of low-carbon technologies such as CCS is also a crucial complement to the Indonesian government's efforts to achieve the 2030 FOLU Net Sink target.
