On 6 July 2025, during the second session of the 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil, President Praboan Subianto emphasised Indonesia's position in strengthening the multilateral system and economic cooperation among developing countries. The session focused on the themes of Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence. The Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the importance of reviving multilateralism was emphasised by the fact that the world is becoming increasingly multipolar. Prabowo also encouraged the strengthening of economic partnerships between Global South countries and the expansion of the New Development Bank (NDB).
Indonesia has communicated its intention to participate in the NDB in an active manner. It is vital for Indonesia to participate to ensure access to development financing in line with the green transformation agenda and sustainable economic growth. As outlined in the report presented during the discussion on the New Development Bank, several projects are currently in progress, including clean energy projects, infrastructure projects, and projects related to sustainability and green initiatives. Furthermore, Prabowo proposed the 'South-South Economic Compact' initiative to the leaders and delegations of BRICS member countries, with the aim of encouraging BRICS nations to assume a leadership role in facilitating enhanced trade opportunities for Global South countries and facilitating greater integration into supply chains.
