Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) have been identified as a key priority in the national export enhancement strategy. The Ministry of Trade encourages the utilisation of trade agreements and the strengthening of trade representatives abroad to expand market access for UMKM products. Trade Minister Budi Santoso has stated that Indonesia presently has 46 trade representatives in 33 countries, comprising trade attachés and Indonesian Trade Promotion Centres (ITPCs). Furthermore, trade representatives also assist UMKM in identifying potential buyers and oversee the curation of local products to ensure they meet global market standards.
By the middle of 2025, the Ministry of Trade had finalised 19 trade agreements that are now in effect and are intended to provide UMKM with opportunities to enter broader export markets. By 2025, Indonesia had concluded trade agreements with Canada, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Russia, and the European Union. Furthermore, Indonesia's export performance is showing a positive trend. In 2024, exports grew by 2.29%, and in 2025, the government is targeting export growth of 7.1%, with a significant contribution from the UMKM sector. As of May 2025, exports had grown by 6.69% annually. Despite global uncertainty, Budi is optimistic about the continued positive trend.
