Why should Lokapasar be involved in tax collection?

The government is encouraging the involvement of marketplaces or e-commerce platforms in the income tax (PPh) collection process for online merchants. This proposal arises as an effort to simplify tax administration and expand the national tax base, especially from the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector, which has been largely unreached. Through this scheme, lokapasar will act as a collector of ITA 22 or final income tax on every transaction made by sellers on their platform. This mechanism allows tax deductions to be automatically and directly deposited into the state treasury, so that businesses no longer have to report and pay taxes independently. This is considered to ease the administrative burden for MSMEs, while increasing their tax compliance.

Taxation experts believe that this step needs to be followed by clear regulations, reliable technology systems, and training for marketplaces so that the collection process is accurate and does not cause additional burden. On the other hand, the involvement of marketplaces can also create a more orderly and transparent digital economy ecosystem, in line with the national digital transformation target and increase state revenue from the non-oil and gas sector.
