President Prabowo Subianto has officially inaugurated the development of Indonesia’s integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem in Karawang, West Java. The battery plant is expected to reach a production capacity of 15 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2028, starting with 6.9 GWh in its initial phase. According to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, this production output could power between 250,000 to 300,000 electric cars per year. The project is part of a large-scale initiative involving six integrated projects led by a consortium of PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM), Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and international partners including CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL). While one major facility is being constructed in Karawang, the remaining five are set in Halmahera Timur, Maluku Utara, covering a total area of over 3,000 hectares. The initiative is expected to directly employ 8,000 workers and indirectly create around 35,000 jobs, boosting local economic activity with an estimated annual economic impact of USD 49 billion, depending on market fluctuations. The development will also support 18 port infrastructure projects, further enabling supply chain efficiency. Bahlil emphasized that the project faced prolonged and complex negotiations over the past four years, involving collaboration with key government officials including Erick Thohir and BUMN representatives. Despite initial challenges, the project is now considered a significant step forward in realizing Indonesia’s ambitions in the global EV industry, aiming to establish the nation as a key player in the battery supply chain from upstream to downstream.
